The geography minor provides a student the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of our increasingly globalized world.

The relationship between people and their environments creates an amazing field of study. Geographic study brings the student to an awareness of how human culture interacts with the natural environment and the way locations and places can impact people. Students may gain a better understanding of where things are found, why they are there, and how they develop and change.

Applying a geographic perspective demonstrates not just where things are, but "the why of where."

Geographers study space and place to understand why things are located where they are, how they got to be there and what impact they have by being located where they are. The answers lie in analyzing the physical, social, cultural, historical and economic processes at work at any specific location on the surface of the earth. Geographers are interested in identifying and explaining how natural processes and human activities shape our world. A minor in geography provides additional context and depth to many of the issues that are central to a student’s major area of study.

Geography informs us about:

  • The places and communities in which we live and work
  • Our natural environments and the pressures they face
  • The interconnectedness of the world and our communities within it
  • How and why the world is changing, globally and locally
  • How our individual and societal actions contribute to those changes
  • The choices that exist in managing our world for the future
  • The importance of location in business and decision-making
